Practise Spanish and other languages for free with Google: Little Language Lessons
Ubuntu Canarias · 3 min read
Google has a free tool to practise languages with artificial intelligence: Little Language Lessons. It is not a course with levels. It helps you learn what you need at a specific moment: talking to the doctor, asking something at an office or understanding your co-workers.
You can practise Spanish and also English, French, Arabic, Portuguese and other languages, up to 15.
What you need
- A phone, tablet or computer with internet.
- A personal Google account (the same as Gmail). It is for people over 18.
- You do not need to pay or download anything.
The three tools
Tiny Lesson: phrases for a specific situation
You write a situation, for example “making a doctor’s appointment”, “my first day at work” or “registering on the padrón”, and it gives you vocabulary, useful phrases and grammar tips. You can listen to them out loud.
Slang Hang: how people really speak
It shows a conversation between two native speakers, with everyday expressions explained. You can choose Spanish from Spain.
Word Cam: learn with your camera
You take a photo of what is around you and it tells you what things are called in the language you are learning.
How to open it on your phone or computer
There is no app to download: it works in your browser. But you can add an icon to your screen, as if it were an app.
- Android phone: open Chrome and go to labs.google/lll. Tap the ⋮ menu (top right) and choose “Add to Home screen”.
- iPhone or iPad: open Safari and go to labs.google/lll. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow) and choose “Add to Home Screen”.
- Computer (Windows or Mac): open Chrome and go to labs.google/lll. Save it as a bookmark with the star in the address bar.
Which languages it has
It has 15 languages, including Spanish (from Spain and Latin America), Arabic, French, English and Portuguese. Also German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Hindi, Turkish, Greek and Hebrew. It does not include Wolof, Bambara or other African languages.
Keep in mind
- It is a Google experiment: it may change or stop working.
- Artificial intelligence can make mistakes. If a phrase is important, check it with someone or with a dictionary.
- It is a help for practising; it does not replace Spanish classes. Also see the language courses on our free training page.
